Loi Krathong Festival
Loy Krathong festival is a time of renewal, to give thanks to for the rain given for growth and rejuvenation, and to pray that times ahead will be better. this was very relevant to Thailand’s flood crisis at the time, and many people came and sent little parcels made of banana leaf away on the water complete with flowers and candles – an offering to Buddha.
A tradition that comes with this festival, is the lighting of the lanterns and letting your ‘past self’ or your worries float away. Another ritual of renewal or rebirth.
Below, is a large floating Lotus flower – Loi literally means ‘to float,’ while krathong refers to the lotus-shaped receptacle which can float on the water. Hence, the floating parcels offered to Buddha.
